Facts on Exfoliation

What is Exfoliation?

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin (stratum corneum) with a physical or chemical exfoliation method.

Methods of Exfoliation

Methods of physical exfoliation can include:

• Scrubs
• Toners
• Masks
• Peels
• Abrasive sponges

Methods of chemical exfoliation can include:

• Glycolic Acids
• AHA’s
• Vitamin A (eg. Retinol)
• Enzymatic Exfoliates (eg. Papaya enzymes)

Why Exfoliate?

Your skin naturally exfoliates itself every 28 days, revealing a whole new layer of fresh, young skin cells, however, as we age, this process of cell turnover, (desquamation) slows down, resulting in a loss of tone, elasticity and radiance.

It is important to exfoliate on a weekly basis to help promote your skin’s natural exfoliation process and help prevent build up of dead, dull skin cells.

Spa Treatments for Exfoliation

Many Day Spa’s have a wide range of exfoliation treatments to help towards many skin ailments. Glycolic Facials and Body Scrubs are just a couple of spa services that increase cell turnover and uncover fresh, glowing skin cells.
