Hydration Skin Care tips - collagen and the skin
After the age of 20, the amount of collagen in our skin depletes by 1% every year. Collagen is a fibrous tissue in our skin that is responsible for retaining moisture and keeping skin plump and youthful looking. When collagen starts to “dry up” wrinkles and fine lines appear.
To prevent collagen loss in your skin, moisturizing and taking proper home care steps are crucial to your skin’s health.
Below are four tips to prevent and slow the aging process and loss of collagen:
1. Moisturize – Use moisturizers that prevent loss of moisture and protect your skin. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which holds 1000x it’s weight in water, will actually grab moisture from the air therefore; helping your skin gain moisture content. Guinot Hydrazone Moisturizing Day and Night cream contains a range of ingredients to prevent moisture loss in skin.
2. Use a Sunscreen – The sun’s rays (yes even in winter!) damage the skin’s fibrous tissues, breaking them down from a structural level and causing loss in tone (elastin fibres are responsible for keeping your skin tight and toned) and collagen.
i. Did you know? In the winter, the sun’s rays rebound off the snow 80 x more powerful than if they were just to fall on your skin directly?
ii. In the summer, the suns rays bounce off the sand at the beach 17x stronger then if they were just to hit the surface of your skin directly. No matter which season, an SPF will protect your skin from damage caused by the sun.
3. 8 glasses of water a day – will prevent dry flaky skin and keep the aging away! Water helps to hydrate your skin from the inside out; it’s a well known fact now that the way we treat our bodies from the inside out is a major player of how we look on the outside. Your body uses water to hydrate your cells, plump them up and keep them from drying out. If you work out on a regular basis, you need even more water on a daily basis.
4. Caffeine – Limit caffeinated beverages to a minimum (such as coffee and soda). Caffeine (the #1 used addictive substance in the world) can absorb the water in your body; studies have suggested that caffeine leads to dehydration. The added sugar in these drinks can also wreak havoc on your skin’s appearance as well.
