Dermatologist or Esthetician?
Since I’m often asked, I thought I’d begin this blog by explaining the difference between dermatologists and estheticians.
Essentially, dermatologists deal with the medical condition of your skin. They treat specific skin problems such as acne or rosacea, generally with medication in pill or cream form. Estheticians take a less invasive approach, working with the natural functions of the living skin to solve specific skin problems and achieve balance and optimal skin health.
While dermatologists and estheticians both work with clients to solve specific skin conditions, estheticians also focus on prevention. Regular visits to your esthetician can help avoid problems such as acne in the first place.
Although medications can be successful at reducing or eliminating the effects of a skin problem, they can also have adverse reactions or unwanted side effects. You may also find that the benefits continue only as long as you keep taking the medication.
Estheticians are trained to deliver long-lasting results using gentler, less invasive techniques. An experienced esthetician will carefully assess your skin, ask questions to get to the root of the problem and prescribe a treatment plan that will achieve and maintain balance without creating other problems. She’ll also work with you to identify areas of concern (break outs, acne, signs of aging, etc.) and prescribe a preventative treatment plan to address these issues.
Some people still think of estheticians as beauticians. The truth is that esthetics is tough, physically demanding work. An esthetician is a skin care therapist who has received up to a year of intensive, full-time instruction.
Did you know that esthetics students study a lot of the same material as medical students? Only after they have a thorough understanding of basic biology and the body’s main systems do they move on to learning about specific treatments like facials, body treatments and manicures.
Next, time, I’ll give you some tips about what to look for in an esthetician.
