Get in the Know How: After Sun Care

With summer creeping upon us, we all want to know what we can do to steer clear of summer sun burns, or at best what to do after sun exposure. The truth is most people don’t even put on a sunscreen! The lighter your complexion the more you need you protect it or you will be looking like a tomato. As we have all been told, lathering on sunscreen before going out will help prevent wrinkles, age spots and premature aging, something I know we all cringe at the sound of. Many of us are aware about the reasons and benefits of wearing sun protection, but not many know about the benefits of after sun care products.

It is recommended that you apply an after sun care product following any sun exposure, whether or not you are burnt. Why you ask? After sun care products help restore moisture and calm any sensitivity. Most of us lather on heavy moisturizers and emollients to put hydration back into the skin, but it is best to a specific after sun product as they absorb right in, giving your skin a big drink of water. They also help in reducing redness associated with sun burns without causing irritation to the skin.

There are several products on the market that you can use; our favourite at the spa is Dermalogica’s After Sun Repair. It is a light weight, incredibly soothing balm that helps repair damage, while also helping to cool the skin after a sunburn while reducing discomfort. This unique sun product is packed with ingredients like, Algae and Hylauronic acid, which provide great hydration benefits for the skin to further accelerate the skins recovery process. It also contains a blend of homeopathic herbs, which help to reduce irritation, redness and pain of sunburn.

My tip to you! This summer, if it ever gets here, stay hydrated from the inside out. Drink plenty of water, apply your sun screen, after sun care product and have a happy summer J!
